The Program
What is A Day in the Life of a Preceptor?
In 2020, Dr. Meera Anand and Dr. Heather Buckley put in a proposal to the UBC Faculty of Medicine Strategic Investment Fund to create a teaching curriculum for family doctors, by family doctors. Since inception, the curriculum has been designed with input from family physicians from all over British Columbia. Each topic area has a family physician lead; the project team worked closely with each lead to create a curriculum that responded to the needs of community based family physicians. After a long labour of 18+ months, “A Day in the Life of a Preceptor” was born.

My Division is not listed as participating on the registration form. How do I get involved?
We welcome all family physicians interested in teaching to join! Although we are collaborating with the Divisions of Family Practice to deliver this program, physicians in not-yet participating Divisions can still join with the UBC organized cohorts for the Small Group Case meetings. If you think your Division might be interested, please get in touch with our Faculty Team Members, who would be delighted to speak with you.
What is the program schedule?

Each topic begins with an Overview of the Topic with some delivered as Live Virtual Meetings (synchronously on Zoom), while some delivered as a recording that can be viewed asynchronously. These meetings are meant to engage and inspire your learning in the topic area. The first meeting includes orientation and will run for 1.5 hours from 5:30 – 7:00 pm. The rest of the meetings and videos will run for 1 hour. Please make note of the following important dates.
- September 9, 2025: Topic 1 Overview – Live Virtual Meeting
- November 2025: Topic 2 Overview – Video Recording
- January 20, 2026: Topic 3 Overview – Live Virtual Meeting
- March 2026: Topic 4 Overview – Video Recording
- May 12, 2026: Topic 5 Overview – Live Virtual Meeting

Next, you will complete an hour’s worth of Self-Paced E-Learning content on UBC’s online learning platform. Sounds fun, doesn’t it (we promise we really tried to make it fun and relevant)?

Finally, you will complete the topic by attending a Small Group Case-Based Learning Session hosted by your Division. You will have the opportunity to interact and discuss case scenarios with your peers in an informal and relaxed way. There is the flexibility for groups to combine sessions and meet fewer times.
