A Day in the Life of a Preceptor

A Course for Family Physicians to Advance Teaching Skills

The Office of Faculty Development is working with various groups and Divisions of Family Practice across the province to bring A Day in the Life of a Preceptor to community-based family doctors. It is an accredited teaching skills program with a curriculum that was designed with input from family physicians from across British Columbia. The program is for UBC preceptors and is structured around how teaching is typically sequenced in a community-based office.

The program runs from September through June and covers 5 clinical teaching topics which each take 3-4 hours over 2 months. Each topic is comprised of three components:

  • A live virtual meeting or an interactive video to recap the previous topic and introduce the next topic
  • Self-paced e-learning
  • A small group case-based learning session

Completing all components of the program can earn up to 17.5 Mainpro+ credits.

Please reach out to fac.dev@ubc.ca if you would like to know, though be assured that you are able to participate whether or not your division is participating.

We welcome all current UBC preceptors and family physicians interested in teaching with UBC to join! Although we are collaborating with the Divisions of Family Practice to offer this program, physicians from divisions that are not yet participating can still join with the UBC organized cohorts. If you think your division might be interested, please get in touch with our program team members, who would be delighted to connect. Contact fac.dev@ubc.ca

No – A Day in the Life of a Preceptor is great for aspiring teachers to learn core teaching and assessment skills before taking on learners of any level. The program is structured to take you through the skills you need during a day of teaching from welcoming a learner, to understanding their level to observation and feedback. There is also a special ‘Teaching Tales & Tips’ session designed for new and aspiring teachers to connect with and learn from program faculty and experienced teachers.

A Day in the Life of a Preceptor is accredited for 17.5 Mainpro+ credits when you complete ALL components of the program. Each topic is self-contained and partial credits can be claimed for each component completed. Participants who do not complete all components of the program are able to claim the hours they have completed. Please refer to the Accreditation page for more information on calculating partial credits.
